TUTC Jaagir Lodge

Jaagir Lodge Dudhwa, Palia Kalan, Uttar Pradesh, India

Dudhwa, nestled deep in the rainforests of the Terai in Uttar Pradesh has always been a tourism cul-de-sac. While everyone agrees that it is a pristine forest with fabulous wildlife and birding, wildlife tourism to these parts is yet to scale to numbers that it truly deserves. Not long ago, Dudhwa was a contiguous forest that extended into Nepal across the border into Corbett Tiger Reserve, now a part of Uttarakhand. For years wildlife lovers have explored Dudhwa, often staying in mediocre lodgings without access to quality safari experience or knowledgeable rangers and park guides. Since then, there has been an effort by the government and forest department to improve roads and safari conditions in the Dudhwa National Park.

The Ultimate Travelling Camp (TUTC) took over a forest rest house of yore built by the British in Dudhwa to restore it to a premium lodge. TUTC Jaagir Lodge combines a stellar wildlife and outdoor experience with a stay in this beautiful colonial lodge set amidst farming acres and surrounded by orchards of mango and litchi, and carefully tended gardens. Located in the foothills not far from the Nepal border, in the region of Palia the main building of the lodge was built in the 1940s to which a dining cottage, three villas and four cottages on stilts have been added.

Jaagir Lodge offers suites in the main building, elegantly furnished with antique textiles and hand crafted period furniture. Most of the suites of the lodge either lead into courtyards or verandahs on the ground floor and a large sit-out terrace on the first floor. A path close by leads to the swimming pool and the dining room, with small niches outside ideal for outdoor dining. A high thatched machaan is an ideal lookout over the orchards and farms. The cottages on stilts are set in a clearing amidst the orchards while the villas are set away within enclosures separated by a natural hedge.

The cuisine at Jaagir Lodge is much spoken about by guests and features Indian and Continental dishes. Vegetarian and special requests are easily catered to and for those with a keen bent of mind, the chef is happy to host cooking lessons as well. The Lodge sources most of the ingredients from its own organic vegetable garden. Meals are served in the dining room that features both indoor and outdoor seating.
